Q.       Where did you get the idea for The Genesis Code?

A.        I’ve been interested in ancient civilizations and mythologies for years
and have read extensively about Sumeria, the Maya and Aztec, and the
ancient Egyptians. I’ve also always been intrigued by puzzles and secret
codes, as well as interesting mathematical concepts such as the Fibonacci
sequence and the Golden Ratio. I’m a big fan of cryptograms, number
puzzles and substitution ciphers. My interests in these diverse areas started
to come together when I learned that researchers at Mount Sinai School of
Medicine had figured out a way to hide and transmit a secret message using
human DNA. I remember thinking: “Hey, what if there’s already a secret
message hidden in there?”

Q.        How do ancient civilizations and mathematical codes figure in
The Genesis Code?

A.        As you journey through the labyrinth of mysteries, secrets and
puzzles in The Genesis Code, everything you believe about human history,
genetics, and the origins of mankind will unravel. Long before I came up
with the idea for The Genesis Code, I became fascinated by strange
similarities that appear in the mythologies of many different ancient
civilizations. Scattered throughout the writings of Earth's oldest cultures are
many cryptic references to scientific knowledge that should have been far
beyond the comprehension of their writers. These mysteries became the
foundation of the novel.

Q.          Is it true that the Maya predicted that the world will end in
the year 2012?

A.        The ancient Mayan calendar known as the “long-count calendar”
ends abruptly on December 21, 2012. As the year 2012 approaches,
speculation is running rampant about whether the Maya were predicting the
end-of the-world, the apocalypse, or the beginning of a new age of
mankind.    Ancient Mayan texts and beliefs about the year 2012 figure
prominently in the secrets underlying The Genesis Code.

Q.        What is the Genesis Code?

A.        The Genesis Code is an encrypted message hidden in the
structure of human DNA. When I began thinking about and researching the
concepts behind the novel, I discovered how little we really know about
DNA. Roughly 98% of human DNA is called “junk DNA” by molecular
biologists. It has no identifiable purpose. But it does harbor some
fascinating secrets. Some scientists have interpreted the statistical
properties of “junk DNA” sequences as indicating the presence of an
undeciphered language. That's a truly mind-bending thought. It calls into
question most of what we believe about the human genome. I began
wondering: What type of code or language could be hidden in junk DNA? Is
it a message? A message to humanity? And who put it there?

In The Genesis Code, geneticist Dr. Joshua Ambergris discovers and
deciphers this coded message hidden deep within the structure of human

Q.        Do I need to have an understanding of ancient history and
